C1993-01 Travelling-Allowances within Australia - Chief Executive Officers, Senior Executive Officers and Full-Time Statutory Appointees

Detailed Outline

The arrangements applying to the payment of Travelling Allowances to officers and employees below the SES levels provide that the rate of the allowance diminishes after the absence has passed 35 days.

The likelihood of CES, SES and other full time Statutory Office Holders being absent for periods of more than 35 days on any one occasion is slight, and so far no limit has been specified.

However in the interests of applying consistent treatment in this matter, it has now been decided that the same 35 day limit should be applied across all categories.

The payment of full travelling allowance for any period longer is to be at the discretion of individual Chief Executive Officers having regard to the merits and circumstances of each case.

The new arrangements will take effect in future instances of extended travel by officers in the categories affected by this circular.

Chief Executive Officers as set out in Schedule 3A of the Public Sector Management Act 1988, Senior Executive Service Officers on Level 5 and above, and Statutory Officers receiving a cash salary of $87 486 or above are to be paid the following rates:

  • Capital Cities Elsewhere After 35 Days
  • (including Canberra)
  • $210.00/day or actual $117.20/day or actual $105.00/day.
  • Expenses as provided in expenses as provided in
  • clause 47. Clause 47.

All other Senior Executive Service Officers and Statutory Officers and other Senior Officers on a salary above or equal to $65 759 per annum but below $87 486 per annum should be paid the following rates:

  • Capital Cities Elsewhere After 35 Pays
  • (including Canberra)
  • $181.90/day or actual $113.35/day or actual $90.95/day
  • expenses as provided in expenses as provided in
  • Clause 47. Clause 47.

Please bring the new arrangements for longer term absences on official duty for Chief Executive Officers Senior Executive Officers and full-time Statutory Officers to the attention of your department, and any sub-department or other Authority coming within or associated with your administration.

Yours sincerely,

R G Humphry,
Director-General.
