The Lord Mayor of Newcastle has called for a half day public holiday in Newcastle on Tuesday 30 September 1997 in recognition of the Newcastle Knights splendid victory in Sundays AFL Grand Final.

This is neither an official Public Holiday or a Proclaimed Local Holiday in the terms of the Banks and Bank Holidays Act 1912.

However the New South Wales Government wishes to enter into the spirit of the event and to assist public servants who wish to participate in their city's celebrations to do so.

Managers of public service offices located in Newcastle should make every effort to support the participation of their staff in this special event. However arrangements should also be made to ensure that adequate staffing levels are maintained so that service to the public does not suffer as a consequence.
