C2000-39 NSW Public Sector Workforce Profile: 1999 Findings and 2000 Collection

Detailed Outline

The first annual Workforce Profile collection was conducted in July 1999 after consultation with agencies and major stakeholders, and endorsement by the Government (Circular 99-40, 19 July 1999). All public sector agencies participated and a return rate of 100% was achieved.

Attached is the Overview Report for the NSW Public Sector Workforce Profile 1999. This report presents the major whole of sector findings from the first collection. A report on your agency's own data will shortly be sent to your Workforce Profile representative. The Review and Reform Division (RRD) intends to create an internet website where agencies can view their own data and compare selected indicators to groupings of other budget dependent or non budget dependent agencies. RRD will work with agencies to develop this into a tool for supporting systematic workforce planning.

The Workforce Profile will be conducted again this year and will collect data on all agency staff employed during the 1999-2000 financial year, including a census of all staff employed during the last pay period in June 2000.

RRD will assist agencies to collect the required data. Specific assistance includes briefing sessions for agency representatives, distribution of a detailed Workforce Profile 2000 Workbook, a data template to identify potential errors or missing data, and provision of a helpline to assist staff with the collection during July. With these arrangements in place, agencies will be able to take greater responsibility for data quality in this second collection.

A significant difficulty for last year's collection was the considerable number of late returns, which delayed consolidation and analysis of the database. I request your assistance in ensuring this second annual collection of the NSW Public Sector Workforce Profile is conducted as efficiently and cooperatively as possible. Return of data from agencies identified as Olympic Service Providers should be made by 31st July 2000. Other agencies are required to return their data by 18th August.

Enquiries regarding the Workforce Profile should be directed to Liz Coombs, Executive Director, Corporate Services Reform on 9228 3096 or Jo Grisard, Principal Project Director, on 9228 5130, emails to [email protected]
