The Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 2001 was enacted on 1 September 2001 under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2000. The regulation replaces existing regulations made under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 1983, Factories, Shops and Industries Act 1962 and Constructions Safety Act 1912 with a single consolidated regulation. The key areas of impact of the regulation on all government agencies include:
Other chapters of the regulation may impact on agencies undertaking specific operations such as construction, design work and/or use of hazardous substances. The Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 2001 can be obtained from the WorkCover website on http://www.workcover.nsw.gov.au/. The Premier's Department Review and Reform Division is updating the NSW government policy, 'Taking Safety Seriously', to reflect the changes brought about by the new regulation. To assist agencies in understanding the changes and their implications, the Premier's Department will collaborate with WorkCover and Treasury to conduct a seminar in November 2001, focusing on the key impacts of the new regulation for government agencies. I encourage all interested persons to attend. Information regarding the seminar is attached for your information. Further information regarding the update of the whole of government policy and the seminar can be obtained by contacting Cathy Nolan, Review and Reform Division, NSW Premier's Department on (02) 9228 3361.
