(NAIDOC Week 7-14 July 2002)

Theme: 'Recognition, Rights and Reform'.

Agencies are reminded that NAIDOC Week 2002 is to be celebrated from July 7 -14 2002, with Friday 12 July 2002 proclaimed as National Aboriginal and Islander Day. This year's celebrations will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the historic Mabo High Court decision and has the theme 'Recognition, Rights and Reform'.

Agencies are encouraged to support and release Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander staff to participate in NAIDOC celebrations, as set out in 6-19.14.16 of the NSW Government Personnel Handbook;

'All employees who identify as Aborigines or Torres Strait Islander people may be granted up to one day special purpose leave so that they may participate in National Aboriginal and Islander Day celebrations.'

NAIDOC Week celebrations continue to give Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples the opportunity to celebrate their culture and heritage with the wider Australian community.

In the spirit of Reconciliation all agencies are encouraged to support non -Aboriginal and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff to actively participate and engage in NAIDOC Week events.

As a mark of respect and support agencies are encouraged to fly Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander flags alongside the NSW Flag on their buildings.
