This Circular relates to the establishment of the Ministry for Science and Medical Research.

The Ministry for Science and Medical Research, which incorporates the BioUnit of The Cabinet Office, will be functional from 1 December 2003. Mr Peter Loxton will be Acting Director-General of the new Ministry from 1 December 2003, until the finalisation of recruitment action.

The creation of the new Ministerial portfolio of Science and Medical Research was announced by the Premier on 9 March 2003. The portfolio is intended to take a central role in developing and implementing key initiatives, policies and programs in scientific and medical research that have a whole-of-government character. The new Ministry will continue the current program and policy responsibilities of the BioUnit and will also undertake the provision of policy and technical advice on all scientific and medical research issues relevant to the Minister for Science and Medical Research in the execution of his responsibilities.

It would be appreciated if you would bring this Circular to the attention of all senior officers in your administration requesting them to ensure that it is disseminated to relevant officers in your agency so that recognition of the Ministry and its purpose is achieved effectively and promptly.
