The NSW Electoral Commission will employ both election officials and returning officers to ensure the NSW General Election operates smoothly.

Public servants who wish to work as either election officials or returning officers will need to seek permission from their Department Head for other paid work under section 59 of the Public Sector Employment and Management Act 2002.

Separate leave arrangements apply for teachers who are appointed as returning officers.
