M1990-37 Appointments to Boards and Significant Committees

Detailed Outline

Further to my memo of 13.2.1990 dealing with Statutory Authorities Appointments Database (90/5), returns have now been received from all portfolios.

An analysis of existing membership clearly indicates that while improvements are occurring the level of representation of women is still too low, and that of people from non-English speaking background is also unsatisfactory.

My stated commitment to increasing the number of suitably qualified people from both groups will require some positive actions by all of us.

Now that the Women's Advisory Council has handed over the Register of Women to the Office of Public Management, it will be possible to request potential Board members with particular skills and experience, and have detailed C.V.s forwarded for your consideration.

1 believe that this initiative will go a long way towards making some real improvements in the area, and I am glad to say that the
Ethnic Affairs Commission has taken a similar initiative and is currently compiling a register of people from non-English speaking backgrounds who are suitably qualified for appointment to Government Boards.

I encourage you to use the Women's Register, and hope that I will be able to announce significant results in the levels of
representation in March 1991, when 1 will again be presenting the Women's Policy Statement for the coming year.

Further advice and assistance can be obtained by contacting Kent Broadhead in OPM on 228 5390

Yours sincerely

Premier
