Detailed Outline
On 25 September, 1993 the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade announced that Australia was immediately lifting Commonwealth financial, trade and investment sanctions against South Africa. This includes sanctions against government procurement of goods and services from South African suppliers.
By agreement the NSW Government has joined with the Commonwealth in enforcing these sanctions since their inception in the mid 1980's. In accordance with the Commonwealth's decision you are advised that all purchasing sanctions by NSW Government agencies against South African goods and services are lifted immediately.
Please ensure that procurement offices within your administration review. and where appropriate delete, any sanctions clauses relating to South Africa from procurement documentation.
The only remaining sanction against South Africa is the Arms Embargo which is administered by the Department of Defence through Regulation 13B of the Customs Regulations. This will be reviewed after a democratically elected government is installed in South Africa.
