Under the Crown Employees (Public Sector - Salaries December, 1993) Award, relevant classifications of employees will receive a salaries increase of 4 per cent operative from the beginning of the first pay period to commence on or after 1st January 1994. The second increase will be 3 per cent operative from the beginning of the first pay period to commence on or after 1st November 1994.

There has been iecent media speculation that the increase in salaries will result in wide scale retrenchments. Clearly, Chief Executives will need to have regard for budgetary impacts but I wish to reaffirm that any separation of excess employees is only to be approved following consultation with the Workforce Management Centre within the Department of Industrial Relations, Employment, Training & Further Education, in line with the procedures outlined in Memorandum 1993-36.
