In fulfilment of this commitment, I am pleased to provide you with a copy of the Government's Guidelines for Assessing Social Impacts. (see www.cabinet.nsw.gov.au under Publications - Social)

In the Social Justice Directions Statement - Fair Go, Fair Share, Fair Say, the New South Wales Government undertook to develop guidelines to help government agencies assess the social impacts of policy proposals so that any social justice implications are properly considered.

In fulfilment of this commitment, I am pleased to provide you with a copy of the Government's Guidelines for Assessing Social Impacts. (see www.cabinet.nsw.gov.au under Publications - Social)

It should be noted that this document is not meant to impose compulsory assessment requirements but is designed to provide agencies with the tools to identify and evaluate the likely short and long term social impact of policies (including cabinet minute proposals) and programs.

It should also be noted that the application of the Guidelines is not restricted to 'Social' policy relating directly to human services agencies but may be used in all portfolio areas where policy changes have social impacts.

Ministers are reminded of the Social Justice Directions Statement commitment that relevant program objectives, outcomes and outputs will be consistent with the Government's social justice strategy to ensure greater equity, fairer access, participation and recognition of rights in this State.

To help achieve this, you are requested to encourage agencies within your portfolios to use the Guidelines in the development and review of relevant policies and programs.
