I refer to Memorandum No. 1995-33, issued 31 August 1995, regarding the establishment of a Register of People from non-English Speaking Backgrounds who are interested in appointment to Government boards and committees.

It is important that the Government's objective of increasing the representation of people from non- English speaking backgrounds on boards and committees is achieved. The Register currently holds details of people who possess a range of skills, qualifications and experience. Premier's Department has recently stepped up its campaign to encourage suitably qualified people to apply to be placed on the Register.

The Register can be searched for suitable nominees for board and committee vacancies by telephoning one of the contacts below. Resume details can be faxed to agencies immediately.

This increased participation in decision-making is an important component of the Government's strategy to harness and build on the value of our culturally diverse community.

Please request Chief Executive Officers in your portfolio to ensure that information about the Register is disseminated to Chairpersons of Government boards and committees and to officers involved in preparing recommendations on such appointments.
