M2002-02 Participation in the Parade for Volunteers and others involved in Christmas 2001 Bushfire Emergency

Detailed Outline

On Friday 8 February 2002 a parade and concert will be held in Sydney for volunteers and others involved in the Christmas 2001 bushfire emergency. The parade will honour and pay tribute to the outstanding contribution of all those who worked tirelessly during the bushfire emergency.

The parade will begin at 11.30 am from George Street at Circular Quay. The parade will follow George Street past Town Hall and then to Tumbalong Park at Darling Harbour. A concert will follow the parade.

The Government appreciates that many public sector employees who assisted as both paid employees and as volunteers will want to participate in the parade and attend the concert.

To mark the occasion, special leave should be granted to public sector staff who assisted the emergency services during the Christmas 2001 bushfire emergency. One days leave is available to attend the parade and concert on Friday 8 February 2002. Chief Executive Officers are encouraged to grant additional leave on Thursday 7 February 2002 to staff who are unable to travel to Sydney in time for the parade on Friday morning.

No overtime payments apply where excess travelling time is involved. Public sector employees travelling to Sydney will be responsible for any overnight accommodation.

Chief Executive Officers are encouraged to allow as many volunteers as possible to attend the celebrations whilst ensuring that all Government offices remain open and service to the public is maintained.
