About
As Ministers are aware the tsunamis created by the earthquake off Indonesia on 26 December 2004 resulted in catastrophic damage to communities across South and South East Asia. State and Territory Governments are supporting the Australian Government in its response to the disaster under the National Emergency Management Arrangements.
Besides the assistance being provided through the Australian Government to local communities affected by the devastation significant numbers of Australians are returning from these areas who have lost personal effects, official documentation and related papers.
I would ask that all Ministers ensure that their agencies are able to take whatever steps are necessary to ensure that any official New South Wales documentation is processed promptly. Every effort is to be taken to assist Australian citizens and residents re-establish official documentation and minimise further disruption to their lives.
Where replacement documentation is required all costs should be waived.
