M2006-19 NSW Government Immigration and Settlement

Description

NSW continues to be a major destination for migrants and humanitarian entrants settling in Australia. The NSW Government is committed to a co-ordinated approach to settlement planning to meet the needs of new arrivals and to maximise the benefits of immigration to this State.

Detailed Outline

Under the Premier’s directive, the NSW Government Immigration and Settlement Planning Committee was established early in 2005 to fully address settlement planning in NSW.  The Committee’s Terms of Reference are:

  • To fully address settlement planning issues in NSW.
  • To monitor and assess the impact of Humanitarian and Non-Humanitarian Migration in NSW.
  • To coordinate the development of NSW policy and positions on settlement issues, and increase the effectiveness of NSW representation at the Standing Committee on Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (SCIMA) and the Ministerial Council on Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (MCIMA).

On 15 February 2005 the former Premier wrote to Ministers requesting that senior Departmental representatives be nominated to work closely with the Community Relations Commission on the NSW Government Immigration and Settlement Planning Committee.

The Committee first met on 16 March 2005 and has since proven an effective instrument in coordinating the development of NSW policy and positions on immigration and settlement issues.

I ask Ministers to bring the role of the NSW Government Immigration and Settlement Planning Committee in fully addressing immigration and settlement issues to the attention of agencies within their administration. Chief Executives should ensure that officers involved in immigration and settlement issues report to the nominated departmental representative on the Committee and that all policy positions on immigration and settlement issues are cleared through the Committee.
