Proclamation from the Governor-General that alongside Australian National Flag Day will also be Merchant Navy Day to be commemorated annually on 3 September.
On the 24 June 2008 the Governor-General of Australia (General Michael Jeffrey) declared the following:
“I, Philip Michael Jeffery, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, acting with the advice of the Federal Executive Council, declare 3 September in each year as a national day of observance to be known as Merchant Navy Day”.
Organisations and individuals commemorating Merchant Navy Day are free to fly the Australian Red Ensign. The Australian Red Ensign is the official flag flown at sea by Australian registered merchant ships but may be flown along with the Australian National Flag, the Australian National Flag should be flown in the position of honour.
Please bring this matter to the attention of your Department and any sub Agencies or Authorities coming within, or associated with, your administration.
