Detailed Outline

Premier's Memorandum No. 1988-71, deals with the interim arrangements prior to the introduction of the Senior Executive Service (SES) of providing motor vehicles, at either no personal cost to Department Heads or at a minimal cost to other senior officers. I understand that each agency pays fringe benefits tax for motor vehicles provided to officers under these arrangements.

It is requested that your agency provide information in regard to the number of positions that are provided with an official motor vehicle for private use and each employee's contribution for access to this benefit. This information is not required in relation to:

(a) officers whose remuneration is determined by the Statutory and Other Offices Remuneration Tribunal;

(b) officers who are provided with a motor vehicle principally for use on official business eg. certain operational staff for emergency service organisations who need to be on call; and

(c) public employees provided with a motor vehicle on a salary sacrifice basis (SES arrangements).

Please also advise whether any SES officers in your administration are provided with motor vehicles under the arrangements outlined in Memo No. 1988-71.

It would be appreciated if this information could be furnished to the Acting Director, Management Improvement Division, Public Employment Office, Level 30, Governor Macquarie Tower, 1 Farrer Place, Sydney, 2000 by 29 December 1995, (fax 228-3102). Nil returns are still required, where appropriate. I would also appreciate your agency nominating an officer who can be contacted within your administration to answer any queries on the information provided.

If you have any inquiries in relation to this matter, they should be referred to Gary McGrath, Public Employment Office on 228-4381.
