The Council on the Cost of Government was established by the Public Sector Management Amendment Act 1995 with a view to achieving a cost effective and world class public sector.

The staff of the Council (known as the Office of the Council on the Cost of Government) were initially located within Premier's Department. However, for administrative ease and efficiency, the staff of the Council have been transferred from the Premier's Department to the Public Employment Office.

The address and telephone numbers of staff have not changed under these arrangements.
