C1997-23 Practical Workshops for the Elimination of Discrimination in Industrial Instruments

Detailed Outline

The NSW Government has made a firm commitment to the achievement of pay equity in NSW workplaces both in recent legislation and in the NSW Pay Equity Strategy of 1997.

As you are aware, one of the objects of the NSW Industrial Relations Act 1996 is to prevent and eliminate discrimination in the workplace and, in particular, 'to ensure equal remuneration for men and women doing work of equal or comparable value'. The Act also provides for the Industrial Relations Commission of NSW to vary industrial instruments at any time 'to remove any unlawful discrimination arising from the instrument'.

Organisations are encouraged to review all industrial instruments pertaining to their workforce in order to ensure that they satisfy legislative and policy requirements. Premier's Department, Public Sector Management Office and the Office of the Director of Equal Opportunity in Public Employment have developed a set of practical guidelines to assist organisations to identify and eliminate discrimination in industrial instruments.

A series of workshops have been planned to assist your staff in the application of the guidelines. The workshops are aimed at industrial relations and equity practitioners and human resource managers. Each workshop will be conducted over a two hour period and each workshop will be restricted to 20 people. Four initial workshops are planned at this stage:
