Detailed Outline
The NSW Government has stated in the policy document "Labor's Plans For Aboriginal Affairs" that the government will "continue to work towards the goal of having two percent of public sector employees being Aboriginal employees". The attached Aboriginal Employment Equity Plan (AEEP) has been developed to assist Premier's Department and other participating agencies to achieve that goal.
A recent survey from the Office of the Director of Equal Opportunity in Public Employment shows that many agencies still do not have strategies in place for Aboriginal employment. For these agencies, the AEEP can be used as a model document and be adapted to meet their needs. Agencies should look at the nature of their business and determine how this directly or indirectly impacts on Aboriginal people as individuals or as a community. From this, agencies can initiate Aboriginal employment and career development plans that assists the Government in reaching its stated aims and promotes the view that Aboriginal employment is good business practice not just good social policy.
Enclosed within the AEEP is an Employment Options section that provides various alternative strategies your agency can adopt towards achieving employment equity for Aboriginal people. I am pleased to launch this Aboriginal Employment Equity Plan on behalf of the participating agencies and commend it to you for adoption within your organisation.
