C1999-30 Reconciliation Document Launch - Sydney - May, 2000

Detailed Outline

In 1991 the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation commenced the process of preparing a generally acceptable National Document of Reconciliation for adoption by all Australian Governments.

The Document will comprise a declaration of reconciliation that is symbolic, inspiring and enduring and which will be underpinned by a series of principles defining past and future relationships between the indigenous and wider Australian communities. These principles will provide the basis for commitments addressing issues in practical and realistic ways so that the indigenous and wider communities can move forward together.

It is intended to officially launch the National Document of Reconciliation over the weekend of Saturday, 27, and Sunday, 28 May, 2000, at special events to be held in the City of Sydney.

Beginning with a State Reception during the evening of Friday, 26 May, the special events will involve the formal presentation of the Document of Reconciliation at a ceremony at the Sydney Opera House on Saturday, 27 May, then a peoples' walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, together with associated entertainments, on Sunday, 28 May, 2000. Sunday entertainments will be positioned at various localities in the City and North Sydney.

To facilitate the successful coordination of all the resources necessary to ensure the complete success of the special events, an organising committee has been established under the joint chairmanship of Mr Ray Martin of the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation and Mr Geoff Scott, Director-General of the NSW Department of Aboriginal Affairs.

The NSW Coordination Committee for May, 2000, Events' has representation from the Premier's Department, the Council of the City of Sydney, North Sydney Council, the Roads and Traffic Authority, the Police Service, State Transit, State Rail, Sydney Opera House Trust, Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust and SOCOG.

The State Government strongly supports the efforts of the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation and the NSW Reconciliation Committee and the Premier has asked me to inform all CEOs that the Government expects that all agencies will assist the coordination committee to ensure the success of the events in May, 2000.

The NSW Coordination Committee for May, 2000, Events' may be contacted through Mr Jeff Fitzgerald, Assistant Director, Community Projects and Management Services, Premier's Department, on 9228-5221, or by fax on 9228-5249.
