The New South Wales Government, through its agencies, runs one of the largest motor fleets in Australia. The proper management of this fleet is an important element in meeting the Government's commitment to providing improved public services and efficient resource management.

Every Chief Executive Officer has a responsibility to ensure that effective motor vehicle policies and management procedures are followed within his or her agency.

A revised consolidated Motor Vehicle Policy is now available on the Premier's Department website look under Publications then Travel)

The policy reinforces the need for agencies to maintain motor vehicle fleets that:

  • keep vehicle numbers to the minimum necessary to meet normal operational requirements;
  • comprise vehicles that do not exceed the minimum specifications for the tasks they are required to undertake;
  • make appropriate operational use of vehicles packaged on a private/business basis; and
  • are managed in accordance with sound energy and environmental principles.

Chief Executive Officers should ensure that accountability and transparency of procedures are accorded the highest priority, and that audit and regular review processes are put in place to ensure compliance. Adherence to this Motor Vehicle Policy should contribute to significant financial and environmental benefits.

While the principles contained within the Policy must be observed by all general government agencies, it is also strongly recommended as a basis for other government organisations, including public trading enterprises, to follow.
