Detailed Outline
On Friday 6 October 2006 the Pedestrian Council of Australia is encouraging people to leave their cars at home and instead combine walking with public transport in travelling to and from work.
Walk to Work Day originated in New South Wales and is now a national community awareness event that aims to:
- Promote regular walking as a healthy activity - creating better physical and mental welling
- Reduce the reliance on the private motor vehicle - particularly for short trips
- Promote the use of public transport
- Improve air quality by reducing unnecessary vehicle emissions
This year's event Make Time - Walk Every Day encourages people, however busy they are, to make time for regular walking and also promotes healthy eating. A healthy lifestyle is important for the prevention of and early intervention in chronic disease and obesity.
The NSW Government supports Walk to Work Day and all public sector staff are encouraged to participate in the spirit of the event on 6 October 2006.
Further information about Walk to Work Day is available from the Pedestrian Council of Australia's website www.walk.com.au or telephone (02) 9968 4555.
