Detailed Outline
Earth Hour is an initiative of WWF-Australia and The Sydney Morning Herald that calls on individuals, households and businesses in Sydney to turn off their lights for one hour on Saturday 31 March 2007 between 7:30pm and 8:30pm. The event aims to demonstrate a commitment to reduce global warming and show that individual actions can make a difference. This year's Earth Hour will happen in greater metropolitan Sydney, but the organisers hope that Earth Hour can grow into an annual event and a global campaign. Earth Hour hopes to send a signal around the world. A photo will be taken from space of the Sydney lights prior to being turned off and after they have been turned off. This event has the full support of the NSW Government. The event is voluntary and relates to non-essential lighting - not lighting that impacts on public safety. Earth Hour will therefore not involve street lights, trains or public areas. NSW Government agencies and authorities are urged to participate in Earth Hour in the manner that is appropriate and does not compromise public safety.
