On 10 May 2007 the NSW Industrial Relations Commission made the Crown Employees (Research Scientists) 2007 Award (the Award) with the consent of the Public Service Association. The Award supercedes the Crown Employees (Research Scientists) Award 2004.

The Award applies to research scientists employed in accordance with the Public Sector Employment and Management Act 1996 in departments participating in the classification. The Award provides the classification structure and rates of pay for research scientists, and is read in conjunction with the Crown Employees (Public Sector Conditions of Employment) Reviewed Award 2006 and the Crown Employees (Public Sector - Salaries) Award 2007.

The Award introduces a new level of research scientist - the Senior Principal Research Scientist. The addition of this new level reflects the level of work some research scientists may perform. The Senior Principal Research Classification applies from the 2007 round of interviews. Advertisements for this round commence 16 May 2007.

Entry to, and progression through the levels, is set out in the Research Scientists Classification: Policy and Guidelines issued by the Department of Premier and Cabinet on 1 May 2007. These guidelines are available on the Department’s website under publications > employment conditions.
