  • Publication of the Internet of Things (IoT) Policy, comprising the IoT Policy Statement and IoT Policy Guidance. The policy provides practical guidance and tools to support agencies implement IoT-enabled projects and solutions safely.

Detailed Outline

The IoT Policy supports the NSW Government’s smart places vision

The IoT Policy guides investment in IoT for all categories of connected infrastructure, goods and services to maximise benefits and manage potential risks.

The policy was developed in response to recommendation 31 of the NSW State Infrastructure Strategy 2018-2038. It will help NSW Government to realise its smart places vision, as part of broad reforms focused on the convergence of digital and infrastructure.

The IoT Policy is in two parts: IoT Policy Statement (Attachment A) and IoT Policy Guidance available at www.digital.nsw.gov.au/policy/internet-things-iot.

The IoT Policy Guidance provides practical guidance to implement IoT-enabled projects

The IoT Policy Guidance provides practical guidance on delivering IoT-enabled projects. It has been developed as a how-to guide for project managers and non-tech experts.

The IoT Policy Guidance is available as a series of digital toolkits at www.digital.nsw.gov.au/policy/internet-things-iot.

The toolkits provide:​

  • practical guidance to help design, plan and implement IoT solutions​
  • advice on standards and obligations where available and practical​
  • tools and templates to help effectively manage an IoT-enabled project​
  • guidance on where and how to source additional advice if required.

The IoT Policy will support growing IoT maturity across NSW Government

The policy aims to contribute to growing IoT maturity sector in government by supporting agencies to: 

  • adopt a consistent approach to IoT ​​ 
  • build understanding and capability across the sector​
  • improve their understanding of the customer benefits, limitations and risks of IoT​​ 
  • ensure more purposeful collection, analysis and application of data​​ 
  • be more strategic in the design and implementation of IoT projects. 
  • encourage experimentation with IoT solutions​.
