Publication and adoption of the AI Strategy, Ethics Policy Statement and User Guide. The Strategy sets the direction on the development and use of AI by NSW Government agencies. The Ethics Policy sets out the principles agencies are required to adhere to. The User Guide provides practical guidance on deploying AI-enabled solutions.

The NSW Government has issued an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy

The AI Strategy sets the direction on the development and use of AI by NSW Government agencies and is underpinned by the mandatory AI Ethics Policy and AI User Guide. The AI Strategy aims to build maturity in Government use of AI and sets out an action plan over the next 12 months to build maturity across five key areas: building public trust, digital uplift, building data capability, procurement and innovation and collaboration.

The AI Ethics Policy provides a principles-based approach to applying AI in NSW Government

The AI Ethics Policy outlines five key principles that will ensure that AI is only used where there is a strong case for doing so. It is focused on better customer services, improved decision-making, transparency, fairness and accountability.

The AI User Guide sets clear minimum requirements for AI technology deployment

The AI User Guide provides practical guidance and best practice for project managers when deploying AI-enabled solutions. The guide covers the following stages of a project:

  • Scoping – to assist in understanding if AI is the appropriate tool

  • Planning – considerations must be given to compliance with relevant government policies, Commonwealth and NSW privacy frameworks, stakeholder engagement, project risks, data management

  • Sourcing – key considerations for procuring AI solutions including procurement specifications and the procurement landscape

  • Designing – key considerations to ensure an AI solution is tested and scaled appropriately.
