Detailed Outline
Open data provides public access to information in a variety of formats for reuse. This delivers benefits across government, to individuals and industry, and contributes to wider social and economic benefits.
The objectives of the NSW Open Data Policy are to assist NSW Government agencies to:

release data for use by the community, research, business and industry sectors

accelerate the use of data to derive new insights for better public services

embed open data into business-as-usual
-
use data to inform the design of policy, programs and procurement
-
support the use of data by the NSW Data Analytics Centre
-
advance citizen engagement with government and the work of government
-
support operation of the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 (NSW) (GIPA Act) and promote simple and efficient compliance with the requirements set out in that Act.
The policy was developed through consultation across the sector and with industry and informed by contemporary research and experience since the release of the previous version in 2013. The policy moves to an action-oriented approach, translating each established principle into clear responsibilities for agencies to support responsible data management and sharing The appendix to this circular includes the policy and action plan, which sets out the approach to deliver on the policy objectives.
