  • embed open data into business-as-usual

  • use data to inform the design of policy, programs and procurement

  • support the use of data by the NSW Data Analytics Centre

  • advance citizen engagement with government and the work of government

  • support operation of the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 (NSW) (GIPA Act) and promote simple and efficient compliance with the requirements set out in that Act.

The policy was developed through consultation across the sector and with industry and informed by contemporary research and experience since the release of the previous version in 2013. The policy moves to an action-oriented approach, translating each established principle into clear responsibilities for agencies to support responsible data management and sharing The appendix to this circular includes the policy and action plan, which sets out the approach to deliver on the policy objectives.
