M1990-39 Cabinet Re-organisation and Administrative Changes

Detailed Outline

The first major re-organisation of our Cabinet has been achieved with commendable smoothness and speed. There still remain a number of administrative details to be resolved on which the Directors-General of The Cabinet Office and Premier's Department will be consulting Ministers in coming days.

I wish to thank all Ministers for the co-operation given so far which has allowed the smooth achievement of what amounts to a change involving almost half the Cabinet.

One of the pleasing features of the present re-organisation of Ministerial portfolios is that it is to be achieved without any additional expenditure on the fit out of Ministerial accommodation.

The officers of the Public Employment Industrial Relations Authority will have already been in touch with the Chief Executive Officers of Departments concerning Ministerial Private Staffs whose Ministers have been involved in the changes. I urge those Ministers whose private office establishments are the subject of examination as a result of the present changes to minimise the size of your private office staff, so that scarce staff resources can be allocated according to the highest priority needs to maximise the services provided to the community.

Ministers who might become aware of difficulties which have not so far been identified are requested to bring them to the notice of the Directors-General of The Cabinet Office or the Premier's Department, as appropriate.
