M1990-47 Senior Citizens Week - 3rd to 10th March 1991

Detailed Outline

I have recently announced that Senior Citizens Week willbe held from 3rd to 10th March 1991.

I would like to invite the Departments and Authorities under your administration to take part in this special community program. There are abundant opportunities for Government agencies to become involved in Senior Citizens Week, from the development of special activities for older people, to free entries to Government facilities. Such activities may be organised in co-operation with local groups by providing staff and resources where possible.

The many significant changes made to the program in the past twelve months have resulted in the promotion of Senior Citizens Week as a time to advance a more positive outlook on ageing for people of all ages. Market research has shown that there is generally a poor perception of ageing in the community and many negative stereotypes prevail. More than ever, it is important to foster events which recognise the many and varied interests and needs of older people and, wherever possible, involve older people in their planning and implementation. Accordingly, 1 would urge you to encourage your Departments and Authorities to develop activities which support these guidelines.

The Senior Citizens Week program will be co-ordinated by the Office on Ageing within my Department. I would appreciate it if you would nominate a contact officer in each of your organisations. These details should be forwarded to Gail Griffith, Senior
Project Officer, Office on Ageing, Premier's Department, 1st Floor, State Office Block, 74-90 Phillip Street, Sydney 2000
(telephone (02) 228 4252 or facsimile (02) 228 3297) by 10th September 1990.

Further details concerning the planning of Senior Citizens Week will be available shortly to assist contact officers with the
development of appropriate activities. Details of proposed activities should be provided to the Office on Ageing no later than 16th November 1990 for inclusion in the Senior Citizens Week program magazine.

Yours sincerely

Nick Greiner
