Detailed Outline
Government Guidelines for the New South Wales Coast were circulated in March, 1989. Following extensive consultations and consideration of public submissions on the guidelines, the Government has now released the NSW Coastal Policy covering the full range of coastal management issues.
The primary aim of the Coastal Policy is to protect the coastline and beaches for the enjoyment of future generations and to ensure that coastal development is balanced, well planned and environmentally sensitive.
It should be noted that the Coastal Policy vests responsibility for the effective management of the coastline in one body - the Coastal Committee of NSW. Coastal policy making will no longer be characterised by the fragmentation of responsibilities within and between levels of Government. Specific management tasks will be undertaken by relevant Government agencies, but the Coastal Committee will ensure that these tasks are properly co-ordinated.
Government agencies with a key role in the implementation of the Coastal Policy have been provided with sufficient copies to enable distribution to their regional offices. Additional copies of the Policy may be obtained from the Department of Planning, 175 Liverpool Street, Sydney, 2000. (Telephone (02) 391-2000).
Would you please draw this matter to the attention of all organisations within your administration.
Yours sincerely,
Nick Greiner MP
