M1994-09 Relations with CFMEU/BWIU

Detailed Outline

Agreement has now been reached between the Government and the building unions division of the CFMEU regarding reform of the construction industry.

Consequently, the previous restrictions imposed on contact with the union (Premier's memo 92-11 and guidelines of 17 June 1992 from the Minister for Industrial Relations) are rescinded and agencies are now to resume normal relations with the union.

1 might add that the Government has undertaken not to pursue de-registration proceedings against the union, provided that the union complies with the terms of the agreement. In this respect a Monitoring Committee is to be established with a view to resolving compliance issues. This Committee will be provided with administrative support by the Department of Industrial Relations, Employment, Training and Further Education and inquiries might be made to DIRETFE direct (Mr A Dungan telephone 266-8419) should further details be required.

1 should be pleased if you would bring this matter to the notice of agencies within your administration.

Yours sincerely

John Fahey
Premier
