About

The current approved Cabinet Minute template does not require consideration of salinity impacts. NSW Salinity Strategy 'Taking on the Challenge' was a former Government policy.

In August 2000, I launched the NSW Salinity Strategy 'Taking on the Challenge'. The Strategy provides a framework for salinity management in New South Wales.

The Strategy requires all Cabinet Minutes dealing with new developments and/or natural resource management issues to consider the salinity impacts of the proposal.

Accordingly, Ministers should ensure that any Cabinet proposal involving natural resource management or a new development is assessed for its salinity impact. The salinity impact should be briefly discussed in the Cabinet Minute, as part of the general assessment of the costs and benefits of the proposal.

Further information and advice on salinity can be obtained from the Director, Salinity Strategy, Department of Land and Water Conservation, telephone 9228 6111 and the Department of Land and Water Conservation's salinity website, www.dlwc.nsw.gov.au/care/salinity/index.html .
