M2001-12 2002 NSW Supplementary Survey of The ABS

Detailed Outline

In October each year, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) undertakes a State-level supplementary household survey, free of charge, for a NSW Government agency or consortium of agencies as part of the ABS' annual portfolio of services. The ABS is currently inviting NSW Government agencies to make submissions for the 2002 Supplementary Survey.

The Supplementary Survey (SS) is an ideal opportunity for NSW Government agencies to obtain high-quality statistical data at no cost for survey design, data collection and processing, as the SS is run as a supplement to the ABS Monthly Population Survey which generates statistics on employment and unemployment. The sample size is large across NSW (6,000 households, or about 12,600 persons), with a response rate in excess of 88%. The Survey is conducted under the authority of the Census and Statistics Act 1905.

The ABS has prepared relevant documentation to assist agencies in preparing their submission, including background information, guidelines on how to prepare a submission, pro-forma for topic submissions, selection criteria and timetable. Submissions by agencies are expected to reach the ABS by close of business Monday, 15 October 2001. The ABS expects to announce the successful topic by 30 November 2001.

I strongly urge all NSW agencies to consider putting a submission to the ABS for the 2002 NSW Supplementary Survey. It is also recommended that agency representatives confer with (1) ABS representatives before any submission is finalised to ensure that it satisfies survey design and statistical guidelines; and (2) their counterparts in the Cabinet Office in regard to consistency of their proposals with the Government's policy priorities.

Queries on statistical issues may be directed to Ms Jill Tomlinson of the ABS by phone on (02) 9268 4123 or email [email protected]
