M2002-11 Spokeswomen's Program

Description

This memorandum is superceded by Circular 2008-33

Detailed Outline

Organisations are only as strong as the people who work within them. To achieve an effective, efficient and productive public sector, it is critical to enhance equality and fairness in the workplace, and by doing so, ensure all employees have the opportunity to reach their potential.

The Government's commitment to employment equity has been demonstrated by key policy initiatives and strategies. The Spokeswomen's Program is an important component of a range of strategies designed to improve gender equity in public sector employment.

It is a key management strategy for providing information and development opportunities for women while at the same time increasing the overall expertise of organisations.

It is a policy requirement for your portfolio organisations to operate a Spokeswomen's Program (Memorandum 97-19).

A comprehensive review of the Program was undertaken in 2000. A strategic plan has been developed to assist with new Program directions. The goal is to build on past strengths and revitalise the Program to ensure it meets contemporary needs. It involves the facilitation of sector wide consistency in key areas whilst encouraging autonomy and innovation in implementation within individual agencies.

Your active assistance in supporting the continuing operation of the Spokeswomen's Program and implementation of new directions in portfolio organisations is sought.

The Spokeswomen's Program Management Committee is the executive body responsible for the operation of the Program and is required to report to me on sector wide activities of the Program.

If you require further information concerning the Spokeswomen's Program please contact Frances Parker on telephone 9228 3056.
